Tupac Shakur, Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Who killed Tupac, is he still alive, what does THUG LIFE stand for? More than 50 questions about Tupac Shakur, answered briefly and sourced.

Friday, September 13, 1996, 4:03 p.m.: Tupac Shakur dies at University Medical Center in Las Vegas, six days after he was shot at a red light a short drive from the Strip. The questions that started that afternoon are the same thirty years later: who pulled the trigger, whether he might still be alive, and what lies behind THUG LIFE and Makaveli.

This page answers the ones asked most often, each kept short and linked to the page that goes deeper. Everything here is sourced, as of October 2026.

Who killed Tupac?

A court has now given an answer, though not yet a final one. On August 31, 2026, a Las Vegas jury found Duane “Keffe D” Davis guilty of first-degree murder with a deadly weapon in Tupac’s killing. Prosecutors never claimed he pulled the trigger: their case was that he got the gun and set the attack in motion. Who actually fired from the Cadillac, the court did not determine.

Sentencing is scheduled for October 13, 2026, and Davis has said he will appeal, so the verdict is not yet final (as of October 2026). The full story from 1996 to the trial is on the Investigation page.

Is Tupac still alive?

No. Tupac died on September 13, 1996, at University Medical Center in Las Vegas after six days of treatment. The Clark County coroner certified his death, an autopsy was performed and he was identified by his fingerprints. Where the rumors come from anyway, and why none of them hold up, is covered under Theories.

When and where was Tupac born?

On June 16, 1971, in East Harlem, New York City. The often-repeated Brooklyn is wrong. Just over a month before he was born, his mother, Afeni Shakur, had been acquitted in the Panther 21 trial. How that beginning shaped his life is told in the biography.

When did Tupac die and how old was he?

On Friday, September 13, 1996, at 4:03 p.m. The cause was respiratory and cardiac failure brought on by his gunshot wounds. He was 25. What happened in the days between the shooting and his death is covered in The Last Week.

What was Tupac’s real name?

His birth certificate reads Lesane Parish Crooks, listed in the order “Parish Lesane Crooks.” Afeni borrowed the surname from a friend she had met in jail: the baby shouldn’t be recognizable at first glance as a “Panther baby.” About a year later she renamed him Tupac Amaru Shakur. All of his names, from the one on his birth certificate to Makaveli, are explained on Names and Aliases.

What does Tupac Amaru mean?

The name is a dedication. Tupac was named after Túpac Amaru II, an Indigenous leader who led an uprising against Spanish colonial rule in Peru from 1780 and was executed in 1781. In Quechua, thupaq means roughly “royal” or “shining” and amaru means “serpent.”

Afeni later said she wanted her son to know he belonged to a world culture, not just a neighborhood. The surname Shakur comes from Arabic and means “thankful” (Names and Aliases).

Why was he called 2Pac?

Because in 1990 he needed a stage name. Tupac had just joined Digital Underground as a roadie and dancer, and he swapped the first syllable of his first name for a number: 2Pac. The name was first heard on Same Song in January 1991. Back in Baltimore he had rapped as MC New York.

What does THUG LIFE stand for?

The two words are an acronym: “The Hate U Give Little Infants Fucks Everybody.” The idea is that the hate a society shows its children ends up coming back on everyone. Tupac had THUG LIFE tattooed across his stomach in 1992, and with his stepfather Mutulu Shakur he wrote a “Code of Thug Life,” a set of rules for the street.

It was meant as an indictment, not an advertisement for crime. Author Angie Thomas named her novel The Hate U Give after it. More under Thug Life.

What does Makaveli mean?

Makaveli was Tupac’s final alias, taken from Niccolò Machiavelli. He read The Prince in prison in 1995, and what drew him was the strategic thinking, not the author as a role model. Less than two months after his death, the album The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory came out under that name. The story that Machiavelli recommended faking your own death is a myth.

What is the 7 Day Theory?

A reading of the album title that stuck stubbornly among fans: The 7 Day Theory was a coded message, Tupac had staged his death and would return after seven years. Sevens were collected from everywhere, from the days he spent in hospital to the digits of his age.

What’s documented is only that the album was written, recorded and mixed in seven days in August 1996. The year 2003 came and went, and nobody came back (Theories).

Where was Tupac shot?

In Las Vegas, at the intersection of East Flamingo Road and Koval Lane, outside what was then the Maxim Hotel. Around 11:15 p.m. on September 7, 1996, the black BMW 750iL driven by Suge Knight stopped at a red light, with Tupac in the passenger seat. A white Cadillac pulled up on the right and someone in the back seat opened fire. The exact sequence of events is on The 1996 Shooting.

How many times was Tupac shot?

Four times in Las Vegas: twice in the chest, once in the arm and once in the thigh. Doctors removed one of his lungs, and he was kept in a medically induced coma. They weren’t the first bullets of his life. He had already been shot during the 1994 robbery in New York, and back then he spoke of five hits (The 1994 Shooting).

What were Tupac’s last words?

If retired police officer Chris Carroll is right, there were two of them. Carroll, one of the first to reach the BMW, told the magazine Vegas Seven in 2014 that he kept asking Tupac who had shot him. Tupac looked at him, took a breath and said: “Fuck you.” According to Carroll, he never spoke again.

It can’t be independently confirmed. But it fits a man who never talked to the police.

Who is Keffe D?

Duane “Keffe D” Davis is Orlando Anderson’s uncle and, according to investigators, a former leader of the Southside Compton Crips. For years he told the story of being in the Cadillac himself: confidentially to investigators in 2008, in TV interviews from 2018 and in his 2019 book Compton Street Legend.

He was arrested in September 2023 and convicted in August 2026. He now insists he is innocent (Investigation).

What happened to Orlando Anderson?

Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson was the man Tupac and members of the Death Row entourage beat up in the MGM Grand lobby on the evening of September 7, 1996, a few hours before the shooting. He was an early prime suspect, denied any involvement and was never charged. On May 29, 1998, he was killed in a shootout at a Compton car wash that had nothing to do with Tupac.

Did Suge Knight have Tupac killed?

There is no evidence for it. Knight was behind the wheel of the same car and was grazed on the head by a fragment. Police said as early as December 1996 that he was not a suspect, and every later investigation led to the Southside Compton Crips. Where the theory comes from and the case against it are on Theories.

Where is Suge Knight now?

In prison. In 2015 the former Death Row boss ran over and killed a man with his pickup truck outside a Compton burger stand. To avoid a murder trial, he pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter on September 20, 2018, and on October 4, 2018, he was sentenced to 28 years. More on Suge Knight.

Why did Tupac and Biggie beef?

Because a friendship broke apart in a single night. Tupac and Christopher Wallace, aka The Notorious B.I.G., met in 1993 and became friends; Tupac brought Biggie on stage at his shows. On November 30, 1994, Tupac was robbed and shot in New York while Biggie and Sean Combs were in the same building. Tupac accused them of knowing about it; both denied it.

With Tupac’s move to Death Row, the diss Hit ‘Em Up and the rivalry between the two labels, it became hip-hop’s most famous feud (East Coast vs. West Coast).

Did Biggie have anything to do with Tupac’s death?

There is no proof. In 2002 the Los Angeles Times reported that Biggie had offered the Crips money for the killing; his family immediately rejected that. In 2008 Duane Davis claimed Sean Combs had put a bounty on Tupac. Combs called it “pure fiction” and was never accused in the Shakur case.

Biggie himself was shot dead in Los Angeles on March 9, 1997, six months after Tupac. His murder has not been solved either.

What is “Hit ‘Em Up” about?

It is Tupac’s reckoning with Bad Boy and one of the most brutal diss tracks in rap history. He recorded it with the Outlawz; it came out in June 1996 as the B-side of How Do U Want It and goes straight at Biggie, Bad Boy and Mobb Deep. In Germany it was certified gold only in 2026, a sign of how much it is streamed today (Tupac and Germany).

Where is Tupac buried?

There is no public grave. Tupac was cremated the day after he died, and there was no public funeral. A burial of his ashes in Soweto was planned for the tenth anniversary in 2006, but Afeni called it off. Most of the ashes reportedly rest in Lumberton, North Carolina, her hometown.

In 2011 the Outlawz said they had mixed some of the ashes with marijuana and smoked them. By their own account they did it at Tupac’s request, echoing a line from Black Jesuz.

Who were Tupac’s parents?

His mother, Afeni Shakur (1947-2016), born Alice Faye Williams, was a member of the Black Panther Party. In May 1971, pregnant with Tupac, she was acquitted along with all her co-defendants in the Panther 21 trial after defending herself in court.

His biological father is former Panther Billy Garland, who played no part in Tupac’s childhood. The man who shaped him was his stepfather, Mutulu Shakur.

Did Tupac have siblings?

Yes. His half-sister Sekyiwa “Set” Shakur was born in 1975; in 2023 she accepted his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. His stepbrother is the rapper Mopreme Shakur, Mutulu Shakur’s son. Through Billy Garland, Tupac had further half-siblings. The whole family is introduced on Family.

Where did Tupac grow up?

In a lot of places. Until 1984 the family lived in Harlem and the Bronx, then in Baltimore. There Tupac studied theater, Shakespeare and ballet at the Baltimore School for the Arts. In 1988 Afeni sent the children to Marin City near San Francisco, and in the Bay Area the drama student became a rapper (biography).

Was Tupac married?

Yes, once and only briefly. On April 29, 1995, he married law student Keisha Morris in prison. The marriage was annulled about ten months later.

Did Tupac have any kids?

No, and he left no will either. That is why his estate passed to his parents under California law, and why the father’s share ended up in court in 1997. He did rap to a child, though: Letter 2 My Unborn is a letter to the son or daughter he never had.

Who was Tupac dating when he died?

Kidada Jones, Quincy Jones’s daughter. The two had lived together since late 1995, she was considered his fiancée, and she was with him in Las Vegas in September 1996. His other relationships are covered on Women.

Did Tupac and Jada Pinkett date?

Never, according to Jada Pinkett Smith. They met at the Baltimore School for the Arts and stayed close friends until his death; she describes a soul connection without romance. He wrote poems for her, and she helped him while he was in prison in 1995. More on Jada Pinkett.

Did Tupac date Madonna?

Yes, briefly in 1994. Madonna confirmed it in a 2015 radio interview. In 2017 a letter surfaced that Tupac had written her from prison in 1995. In it he explains the breakup partly with his image as a Black artist. The full story is on Madonna.

Who owns Tupac’s estate?

At first his mother inherited it. Billy Garland demanded half, but a Los Angeles court turned him down in December 1997 because he had done so little for his son. Afeni founded the Amaru label and, before her death in 2016, placed the rights in a trust administered by former Interscope executive Tom Whalley. In 2022 Tupac’s sister Sekyiwa sued Whalley over his compensation; he denied the claims (His Companies).

In 2024 the docuseries Dear Mama was added to the list with a nomination for Best Music Film; the award went to the David Bowie film Moonage Daydream. Since 2026, at least, All Eyez on Me has been in the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Is Tupac in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?

Seven: Nothing but Trouble (1991, cameo), Juice (1992), Poetic Justice (1993), Above the Rim (1994), Bullet (1996), and Gridlock’d and Gang Related (both 1997). The last three reached theaters after his death. Critics first took notice of him as the volatile Bishop in Juice; Roger Ebert considered Gridlock’d his best performance (Filmography).

Is there a movie about Tupac?

Yes. The biopic All Eyez on Me, starring Demetrius Shipp Jr., opened on June 16, 2017, which would have been Tupac’s 46th birthday, and critics panned it. All his cases are listed under Legal Cases.

What happened at Quad Studios in 1994?

In the early hours of November 30, 1994, Tupac went to Quad Recording Studios in Times Square to record a verse. Three armed men ambushed him in the lobby, shot him and took jewelry worth about $40,000. He survived, left the hospital against medical advice and appeared in court the next day in a wheelchair. Who was behind the attack has never been established in court (The 1994 Shooting).

What was Death Row Records?

The Los Angeles label run by Suge Knight and Dr. Dre, home of Snoop Dogg and G-funk, distributed through Interscope. Tupac signed a three-album deal there in October 1995; in return the label posted his bail. Dr. Dre left as early as March 1996. After Tupac’s death and Knight’s imprisonment from 1997 the label fell apart, and in 2006 it filed for bankruptcy. More on Death Row Records.

Who were the Outlawz?

The crew Tupac built in 1995 from childhood friends. He gave them aliases taken from enemies of the United States, such as Kadafi, Napoleon, Hussein Fatal and E.D.I. Was the Tupac hologram real?

Only the illusion was real. Technically it wasn’t a hologram but a projection based on the “Pepper’s ghost” trick: an image is reflected onto the stage via a nearly invisible foil. That’s how a digital Tupac stood next to Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg on April 15, 2012.

It wasn’t archive footage either. The effects house Digital Domain created the performance from scratch, which is why Tupac could even greet “Coachella,” a festival that didn’t exist in his lifetime.

Did Drake use Tupac’s voice with AI?

Yes. In April 2024, in his feud with Kendrick Lamar, Drake released Taylor Made Freestyle, which featured AI voices sounding like Tupac and Snoop Dogg. Tupac’s estate called it a “blatant abuse” of his legacy and threatened to sue. A few days later Drake pulled the song.

What is “Dear Mama” about?

Dear Mama, released in 1995, is Tupac’s love letter to Afeni Shakur. The song glosses over nothing: it talks about her crack addiction and about her strength. In 2010 the Library of Congress added it to the National Recording Registry, one of only a few rap recordings to make it. In 2023 the docuseries about mother and son took the same title.

How tall was Tupac?

No official figure has been published. Numbers between roughly 5’9” and 5’10” (1.75 to 1.78 meters) circulate online, usually without a verifiable source. Since that can’t be backed up, no fixed height is given here: better a gap than a made-up number.

How old would Tupac be today?

Tupac would have turned 55 on June 16, 2026. He lived 25 years, two months and 28 days. His solo career ran from November 1991 to September 1996, less than five years (Timeline).

Is there a Tupac statue in Germany?

Yes, in Herford in eastern Westphalia. In 2005 Italian artist Paolo Chiasera placed a statue of Tupac outside the MARTa museum; according to the local paper Neue Westfälische, it is probably the only one in Germany. Why it stands there of all places, and what else connects Tupac to Germany, is on Tupac and Germany.

A rapper from East Harlem whose only German monument, as far as anyone knows, stands outside a museum in eastern Westphalia: that, too, is part of the trail Tupac has left thirty years after his death.
