Background · Changes
When Changes was released in 1998, Tupac had been dead for two years and the recording was already six years old. Even so, no song of his ever charted higher in Germany: as the new single for the compilation Greatest Hits, the track became his biggest hit in Europe.
Recorded in 1992, remixed for 1998
Changes addresses racism, police brutality, poverty, and the war on drugs. At its core is the question of why nothing ever changes about these conditions. Tupac recorded the song in 1992 during his time at Interscope; individual lines also appear in I Wonder If Heaven Got a Ghetto, which was created the same year.
For the 1998 release, Poke of the Trackmasters production team reworked the track. The chorus, which incorporates Bruce Hornsby's The Way It Is, is sung by Talent, an R&B trio from Kansas City.
No. 2 in Germany, double platinum in the UK
In the US, Changes reached No. 32, but in Europe the single became a hit: it rose to No. 2 in Germany and Switzerland, No. 3 in the UK, and reached the top 10 in Austria and Ireland. The song was nominated for a Grammy; the UK awarded it double platinum in 2023.
