Background · All Eyez on Me
In October 1995 Tupac walked out of prison on a $1.4 million bond. Death Row boss Suge Knight and Interscope co-founder Jimmy Iovine had put up the money, and the price was a three-album contract. Barely four months later All Eyez on Me hit stores: two discs, 27 songs, recorded in roughly two months. It became his most successful studio album.
Two Albums in One Run
The double album covered two of the three records owed under the deal in one go. Its working title was Euthanasia, and a Christmas 1995 release was planned. But Tupac recorded so much that the date slipped to February.
Collaborators such as Johnny "J" and Daz later described him cutting several songs a night at Can-Am. By their account, Ambitionz az a Ridah was recorded on his very first night out.
The mood is a long way from Me Against the World. Where that album wrestled with doubt, this one goes for victory laps, parties and score-settling: with the police, with fake friends and, between the lines, with the people he blamed for the 1994 shooting.
Death Row at Its Peak
Johnny "J" sets the tone, producing about a third of the album with Tupac, including How Do U Want It, Life Goes On and the title track with Big Syke. Daz Dillinger supplied dark West Coast beats for Ambitionz az a Ridah, 2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted and I Ain't Mad at Cha.
Dr. Dre contributed the California Love remix and Can't C Me with George Clinton. All About U (with Nate Dogg and Snoop Doggy Dogg) is built on a sample of Cameo's Candy; DJ Quik produced Heartz of Men, DeVante Swing No More Pain.
The guest list shows the label in its strongest phase: Snoop, Nate Dogg, Daz and Kurupt, plus Method Man and Redman from New York and Bay Area heavyweights such as E-40, B-Legit and Richie Rich. On When We Ride, the Outlawz appear as a group for the first time.
105 Weeks on the Chart
All Eyez on Me debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and spent 105 weeks on the chart. California Love and How Do U Want It topped the Hot 100 as a double A-side. Further singles were 2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted and I Ain't Mad at Cha, whose video aired just after Tupac's death in September 1996.
Why Diamond Does Not Mean Ten Million Buyers
The RIAA counts each copy of a double album twice. That is why the record was already five times platinum in April 1996 and reached Diamond status (ten million units) in 2014. Nielsen figures put actual US sales at roughly 5.9 million copies. The widespread claim of more than ten million albums sold also rests on this way of counting.
From Bestseller to Classic
Contemporary reviews praised the production, though some missed the social focus of the early records. Since then All Eyez on Me has come to be regarded as a West Coast classic. It was nominated for Best Rap Album at the 1997 Grammys, and Rolling Stone ranks it among the 500 greatest albums (No. 436 in 2020). On February 11, 2026, it was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
It remained the last album released in Tupac's lifetime. Seven months after it came out, he was shot in Las Vegas, and the record's victory lap took on a bitter echo.
