Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2017: Tupac at the Barclays Center
First solo rapper in the Hall of Fame: How Snoop Dogg accepted the honor for Tupac at Barclays Center in 2017 and why the induction matters.
Honor: Induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Performer category Date: April 7, 2017 (32nd ceremony), Barclays Center, Brooklyn, New York Induction speech: Snoop Dogg
Tupac Shakur needed no waiting list: in 2017, in his very first year of eligibility, he entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The eligibility window opens 25 years after an artist’s first release; his debut 2Pacalypse Now had been released in 1991. That the Hall inducted a rapper was no longer taken for granted back then, and yet it marked a watershed moment: according to reports, he was the first solo rapper in the hall of fame.
Voted In on the First Ballot: The Class of 2017
The Hall announced the nomination in October 2016. On December 20, 2016, it was confirmed that Tupac belonged to the class of 2017, together with Pearl Jam, Journey, Joan Baez, Electric Light Orchestra, and Yes (Rolling Stone). A panel of music and media professionals votes on induction.
His mother Afeni Shakur did not live to see the induction: she had died on May 2, 2016.
Snoop Dogg Honors His Homie at Barclays Center
On the evening of April 7, 2017, Snoop Dogg accepted the honor on behalf of his friend at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. According to Rolling Stone, he wanted to show the person, not the “superhero”: Tupac as a homie, more important than any role as an actor or rapper. He recalled the night he went to Afeni after the 1996 shooting. Billboard highlighted a story in which Tupac went parasailing with him while Suge Knight steered the boat. At the end, Snoop raised the award into the air and shouted “Thug life!”.
Several guests provided the music:
- Alicia Keys played a medley on the piano, including I Ain’t Mad at Cha, Dear Mama, and Changes.
- Snoop Dogg and YG rapped together. Rolling Stone names “2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted”, Billboard “Gangsta Party”; the sources diverge.
- Treach (Naughty by Nature) performed Hail Mary.
- T.I. sang Keep Ya Head Up.
HBO aired the ceremony on April 29, 2017. The report on the evening is also featured in the news from April 7, 2017.
Five Groups Before Him: The First Solo Rapper
According to Billboard, Tupac was the sixth rap act in the Hall. Before him, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Run-DMC, the Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, and N.W.A had been inducted, among others-all of them groups. Inducting a solo artist from hip-hop made a statement: the Hall, whose name carries the word “Rock”sees itself as a home for popular music as a whole.
The sequence of honors is striking: during his lifetime, Tupac received no major industry prizes (see Grammys and Awards). The Rock Hall was the first of the major late recognitions; there followed the star in Hollywood in 2023 and the induction of All Eyez on Me into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2026.
Alongside Rock, Folk, and Pop: Part of the Same Story
The Hall of Fame is based in Cleveland and run by a foundation. Its inductions are considered one of the most visible forms of recognition in popular music. For Tupac, this means his music is chronicled alongside rock, folk, and pop as part of the same history. The class of 2017 made that clear, because Alicia Keys, Snoop Dogg, YG, Treach, and T.I. performed songs from several of his albums in a single evening.
Tupac’s Entry on rockhall.com
The Hall lists Tupac in its database of inductees at rockhall.com. Whether and how he is currently showcased in the museum in Cleveland could not be verified (as of October 2026).
