Background · I Wonder If Heaven Got a Ghetto
One year after Tupac's death, a question lingered that occupied many fans: Is there a ghetto in heaven too? As the first single from the estate, I Wonder If Heaven Got a Ghetto announced the album R U Still Down? (Remember Me), the first release from Afeni Shakur's label Amaru.
Redemption After Violence: A 1992 Recording Returns
Tupac asks whether there is redemption after death for people who knew only poverty, racism, and violence in life. The original version, "I Wonda If Heaven's Got a Ghetto," had already appeared in 1993 as the B-side of the single Keep Ya Head Up.
For the posthumous album, Danish producers Soulshock & Karlin built a new, soulful instrumental. Individual lines also appear in Changes, which stems from the same recording phase.
Refuge in Rukahs: The Video from the First-Person Perspective
Lionel C. Martin shot the video on September 14 and 15, 1997, from Tupac's first-person perspective. After gunshots, he drags himself into a convent in the fictional town of "Rukahs" in New Mexico—"Shakur" read backward.
The video is full of allusions to his death: a license plate reads 61671 for his birthday, a clock shows 4:03, the time of his death, and at the end he enters an "Amaru Diner."
Four Tracks for Europe: The CD Single on Jive
Shown here is the European CD single (JIVE CD 446). The date of November 25, 1997, often given for it, was the release date of the album.
