Background · Do for Love
Tupac gives more in a relationship than is good for him, and he knows it all too well: in Do for Love, he shows his romantic side with a wink. The song became the most successful single from R U Still Down? (Remember Me) and one of his best-known posthumous tracks in Europe.
A “Sucka 4 Luv” with Self-Irony
In its unreleased original version, the song was still titled Sucka 4 Luv. The working title set the tone: with self-irony, Tupac tells of a woman for whom he does everything, even though he knows she is taking advantage of him. Soulshock & Karlin built the beat around Bobby Caldwell's 1978 soul classic What You Won't Do for Love. Eric Williams of Blackstreet sings the chorus.
Gold in the US, a Hit in Europe
As the second and final single from R U Still Down?, the song was certified Gold in the US. It performed especially well in Europe: No. 12 in the UK as well as the top 20 in the Netherlands and New Zealand. The British Platinum certification only came in 2025 in the wake of streaming tallies.
The Two-Track Single with Debut B-Side
This edition is the two-track single with an older song as its B-side, as listed on Discogs from the US (Amaru/Jive), Australia, and Europe.
The date of February 24, 1998 roughly corresponds to the US date; Wikipedia gives February 27, 1998. The B-side featured a track from his early days: Brenda's Got a Baby comes from his 1991 debut 2Pacalypse Now.
