Background · I Get Around
No politics, no accusations: with I Get Around, Tupac revealed a different side of himself in 1993. The track was the exact opposite of his political songs-a laid-back party anthem about womanizing alongside his old companions from Digital Underground that brought him near the summit of the pop charts for the first time.
At First, Digital Underground Wanted the Beat Themselves
AllMusic describes the song as boasting about conquests-which is precisely what it is, delivered with plenty of wink. Shock G and Money-B contribute their own verses. According to Wikipedia, the instrumental was initially intended for Digital Underground themselves; when the group failed to come up with fitting lyrics after months, it was handed over to Tupac.
Pool Party in Malibu Before the Theatrical Release
Directed by David Dobkin, the video was filmed in March 1993 at a pool party in Malibu. Just a few months later, Tupac was also appearing on cinema screens in Poetic Justice.
25 Weeks on the Charts and Late Platinum
The single spent 25 weeks on the Hot 100 and peaked at No. 11. The RIAA certified it gold in December 1993 and platinum in 2021, nearly three decades later-bolstered by the inclusion of streaming figures. The single also featured Nothing But Love, a song not included on the album that later resurfaced in 1997 on R U Still Down?.
