Tupac Shakur: The 11th Anniversary and the Night in Las Vegas
On the 11th anniversary in 2007, the site revisited Tupac's last night in Las Vegas: chronicle from the shots to the 2026 verdict, re-examined and corrected.
The same specials on MTV every year: that was what annoyed the site’s author on September 14, 2007, one day after the eleventh anniversary of his death, prompting him to publish his own look back at Tupac’s last night. The text reflects the state of knowledge in 2026.
September 7, 1996: Brawl at the MGM Grand, Shots on Koval Lane
Tupac was in Las Vegas with Death Row boss Suge Knight to watch the boxing match between Mike Tyson and Bruce Seldon at the MGM Grand. After the fight, a brawl broke out in the hotel lobby: Tupac and companions from the Death Row entourage attacked Orlando Anderson, a member of the South Side Compton Crips. The hotel’s surveillance camera recorded the scene.
Later, Tupac rode with Knight in his black BMW toward Club 662, followed by other cars. At around 11:15 p.m., at a red light at the intersection of Flamingo Road and Koval Lane near the Maxim Hotel, a white Cadillac pulled up next to the BMW. Shots were fired from the vehicle into the passenger side. Tupac was hit four times: twice in the chest, once in the arm, and once in the thigh. Knight suffered a head injury from fragments. Tupac’s bodyguard Frank Alexander was not in the car. According to his own account, he was driving another car in the convoy at Tupac’s request.
Tupac was taken to University Medical Center. He died there on September 13, 1996, at 4:03 p.m., six days after the shooting, at the age of 25.
What the 2007 Look Back Got Wrong
The 2007 text contained several inaccuracies that are quietly corrected here: the hits were not to his leg and hand, but to his chest, arm, and thigh. Nor was Tupac “gradually operated on” for six days; instead, he lay in the hospital following emergency surgeries.
The last words attributed to Tupac in the old post cannot be verified and have been omitted. The same applies to the claim that Tupac was the world’s most popular artist after Elvis. More on the night of the crime: Shooting 1996.
Arrest in 2023, Found Guilty in 2026
In 2007, the case was unsolved, and it remained so for another 16 years. On September 29, 2023, Duane “Keffe D” Davis, an uncle of Orlando Anderson and former leader of the South Side Compton Crips, was arrested in Las Vegas. On August 31, 2026, a Clark County jury found him guilty of first-degree murder. According to the prosecution, he had the shots fired in retaliation for the brawl at the MGM Grand; who pulled the trigger was left open by the prosecution.
As of October 2026, the verdict is not final; Davis announced an appeal. Sentencing is scheduled for October 13, 2026. Background: Tupac’s killer unmasked after 22 years?
