Biopic About Afeni Shakur Announced
From the Panther 21 to the birth of Tupac: Amaru Entertainment and the estate bring Afeni Shakur's life to the screen as a feature film.
From prison to the birth of her son: In mid-February 2022, Amaru Entertainment and the estate announced a feature film about Afeni Shakur. The title is Peace, Love & Respect, the Afeni Shakur/Panther 21 story.
Charged as Part of the “Panther 21”
The film is set to chronicle Afeni’s time with the Black Panthers, from April 2, 1969, when she was arrested alongside 20 other Panthers (“Panther 21”) over an alleged plot to bomb police stations, to June 16, 1971, her son’s birthday. Flashbacks show her childhood. Dina LaPolt told Variety that Afeni was five months pregnant when she had to return to prison.
Just a Treatment, No Release Date Yet
LaPolt, who has represented the estate for years, is also a producer. Actress Jasmine Guy and filmmaker Jamal Joseph are named as executive producers. At the time of the announcement, work was only underway on a treatment-an initial script outline-and a production company was being sought. A release date was not set.
