Super Bowl LVI: Homage to Tupac Without a Hologram

No hologram, just the music: how Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg remembered Tupac at Super Bowl LVI with two classics.

On February 13, 2022, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, and Kendrick Lamar were on stage for the Super Bowl LVI halftime show, with 50 Cent joining as a surprise. Tupac was present nonetheless: early in the set, Dre and Snoop performed “California Love,” the 1995 single featuring Dre. Later, Dre briefly played “I Ain’t Mad At Cha” on the piano.

Two Songs Instead of a Projection

Ahead of the show, rumors circulated that Tupac would appear again as a hologram, like at Coachella in 2012. Billboard traces it to an interview with radio host Sway Calloway, who was at rehearsals and gave only an evasive answer. In the end, it was just the songs. Musikexpress and Rolling Stone Germany saw this as the better form of remembrance.
