Megan Thee Stallion: Tupac Sample in "B.I.T.C.H."
Written on a plane, recorded in Las Vegas: How Megan Thee Stallion drew on Tupac's "Ratha Be Ya Nigga" for "B.I.T.C.H." in 2020.
After a performance, the rapper Megan Thee Stallion told her A&R that she wanted to remake a Tupac song. On January 24, 2020, the single “B.I.T.C.H.” was released. According to AllHipHop, the track incorporates a sample of Bootsy Collins’ “I’d Rather Be With You” and Tupac’s “Ratha Be Ya Nigga” from the album All Eyez on Me. The Source had already reported the Tupac sample as a preview two weeks earlier.
Written on a Plane, Recorded in Las Vegas
In a conversation with Zane Lowe on Apple Music, Megan explained that she had to “respect the legends.” She wrote part of it on a plane and the rest in the next hotel room. The recording followed a week later in Las Vegas-the city where Tupac was shot in 1996.
At the time, Megan was working on her debut album and named Pharrell Williams among her collaborators. In this way, Tupac’s recordings continued to live on in songs by a new generation in 2020.
