John Singleton Calls 'All Eyez on Me' a Debacle

Twice he walked away from the project, now he settles scores: Director John Singleton calls the Tupac biopic 'All Eyez on Me' a debacle.

Twice John Singleton was involved with All Eyez on Me, and twice he walked away over creative differences. Accordingly, the director (Boyz n the Hood, Poetic Justice) harshly criticized the finished film. In an interview with station V-103 in Atlanta, where he was promoting his FX series Snowfall, he spoke of a “debacle,” according to Billboard. He was disappointed with how the film turned out, and that he had not been able to make it himself.

A Movie, Not a Cultural Event

The producers had “just made a movie,” Singleton said, not a cultural event. Younger people who did not know Tupac’s significance would only see a rap star, but he had been so much more. Singleton had directed Tupac in Poetic Justice. His criticism joins the debate around the film.
