Jada Pinkett Smith on 'All Eyez on Me': 'Deeply Hurtful'
No goodbye, no fight, no poem: On opening day of 'All Eyez on Me,' Jada Pinkett Smith called the portrayal of their friendship 'deeply hurtful'.
On the opening day of All Eyez on Me, Jada Pinkett Smith took to Twitter. The actress, Tupac’s close friend, is played in the film by Kat Graham. Her relationship with “Pac” was too precious to her, she wrote, to let the scenes shown stand as truth.
Neither a Goodbye Nor a Backstage Argument
Specifically, she clarified: Tupac never read her the poem depicted; she only knew it from the published book. He did not say goodbye to her before departing for Los Angeles, and he did not leave to pursue a career. At his request, she had never attended his concerts, and there was no backstage argument. The reimagining of their relationship was “deeply hurtful.”
The film met with mixed reviews. Alongside her, 50 Cent also criticized the adaptation (see reactions). How the friendship unfolded off-screen is chronicled in the biography.
