"All Eyez on Me" in Theaters: Audiences Show Up, Critics Dismiss It
Theatrical release on Tupac's birthday: Critics judge "All Eyez on Me" poorly, but audiences award it an A grade on CinemaScore.
On June 16, 2017, on Tupac’s birthday, All Eyez on Me opened in US theaters, and in Germany a day earlier, on June 15. The critics’ verdict, however, was largely poor.
Harsh Criticism, but Praise for Demetrius Shipp Jr.
Rolling Stone wrote that the film was “less a biopic than a pop-up Wikipedia page,” accompanied by wooden dialogue and little nuance. The Guardian called it a long, solemn hagiography without passion, less energetic than Straight Outta Compton. Both praised lead actor Demetrius Shipp Jr., however; The Guardian spoke of a “very accomplished impersonation.”
Grade A from Audiences, Further Projects Follow
Audiences saw it more favorably: the film received an audience grade of A on CinemaScore (see box office). For the German release, Musikexpress pointed out that further projects would follow, including a documentary directed by Steve McQueen and a series.
