Powamekka Café: Tupac's Restaurant Dream as a Pop-Up in New York
From April 7 to 9, 2017, Tupac's estate brought his restaurant dream to life in New York: The Powamekka Café opened as a pop-up at Sweet Chick.
Tupac was never able to realize a restaurant of his own. For his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, his estate took up the idea: from April 7 to 9, 2017, the eatery Sweet Chick on the Lower East Side in New York became the Powamekka Café.
Billboard and Rolling Stone reported on the pop-up approved by the Tupac estate. Following an initial stop in Los Angeles in September 2016, for the 20th anniversary of his death, this was its second appearance.
Refuge from the “Cold Reality”
The restaurant is co-owned by Nas, among others. On display were photos from Tupac’s childhood, poetry, and memorabilia. More on his poetry can be found in the Poems section.
The menu featured his favorite dishes, including meatloaf, gumbo, and his cousin Jamala’s fried chicken wings. According to Billboard, Tupac had envisioned a restaurant where people could escape the “cold reality” of the world.
