Straight Outta Compton: Tupac as a Supporting Character
Newcomer Marcc Rose portrays Tupac in Straight Outta Compton, and the $200 million success fuels plans for a standalone biopic.
When Straight Outta Compton opened in August 2015, the film about N.W.A also brought Tupac back to theaters-as a supporting character played by then 23-year-old newcomer Marcc Rose. As Billboard noted in late November, this marked only the second time the character had appeared in cinemas; previously, he appeared in 2009’s Notorious, played at the time by Anthony Mackie. According to Billboard, the film grossed more than $200 million worldwide. A Tupac film was thus considered particularly appealing to studios.
A Standalone Film If the Rights Revert to Afeni
Rose had previously worked on the Tupac film adaptation under John Singleton. He told Yahoo News that he had left along with Singleton. The two were now considering making their own film and wanted to return should the rights revert to Tupac’s mother, Afeni. AllHipHop reported on this on August 21.
Dispute on the Sidelines of the Commercial Shoot
In January 2015, the shoot of a commercial for Straight Outta Compton was the setting of the dispute after which Suge Knight struck two men. The background is documented in the January 30 report.
