Tupac Biopic: Suge Knight Named on Producer List and Removed
Mishap on the Tupac biopic: Suge Knight was listed as a producer. Morgan Creek requested his removal, stating Knight was never involved in the project.
Of all people, Suge Knight: the name of the former Death Row boss initially appeared on a producer list for the Tupac biopic. Billboard reported on the blunder on March 7, 2014. Singleton’s representatives had given the list to the trade press, whereupon Morgan Creek asked for its removal. Spokesman Greg Mielcarz clarified that Knight had never been a producer or connected to the project in any way. The company was unable to explain how the name ended up on the list.
The Actual Producers and a $2.2 Million Settlement
Alongside John Singleton, Billboard named Morgan Creek’s James G. and David Robinson as producers; Afeni Shakur is executive producer. Billboard also recalled a settlement: in August 2013, Afeni received $2.2 million for the estate from Knight’s bankruptcy proceedings.
Work was also underway on the music: singer Ashanti told Complex, according to Vibe on March 5, that she was working with L.T. Hutton of Morgan Creek on the score; the film was slated for release in 2015.
