Tupac Biopic: Fuqua Is Out, John Singleton in Talks
No actor, no director: in fall 2011, the Tupac biopic lost Antoine Fuqua. John Singleton was in talks and dropped out in November.
In February 2011, the production company Morgan Creek had announced a start of filming for the spring. By October, nothing was left of that. According to a report by the New York magazine Vulture, which Complex picked up on October 12, 2011, Antoine Fuqua had left the project. He reportedly had not found an actor strong enough for the role of Tupac.
The Director of Poetic Justice
John Singleton was in talks as his successor. He knew Tupac firsthand: in 1993, he had directed him in Poetic Justice alongside Janet Jackson, and the two were friends during the shoot.
The solution lasted only a few weeks. On November 17, 2011, Complex reported, citing the blog Shadow and Act, that Singleton would not direct the biopic. The report gave no reason. Singleton instead wanted to dedicate himself to a love story of his own, with Tyrese Gibson and Taraji P. Henson, his lead actors from Baby Boy.
This left the biopic without a director once again at the end of 2011.
