On March 29, 2001, the documentary "Welcome to Death Row" about the label's rise and fall screened in New York, also featuring interviews with Tupac.
On the evening of March 29, 2001, the documentary “Welcome to Death Row” was screened in the Tribeca neighborhood of New York. According to MTV News, guests included model Tyson Beckford, producer Stevie J., and singers Coko and Dionne Warwick.
A Label in Retrospect
Director S. Leigh Savidge, who is also the head of distributor Xenon Pictures, chronicles the rise and fall of Death Row Records. In addition to news footage, the film features interviews with Tupac, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, and Suge Knight himself. Former artists such as Nate Dogg and RBX describe Knight’s harsh treatment of employees. Knight was still in prison at the time.
The Role of Harry O
Michael “Harry O” Harris occupies significant space. The film supports his account that he provided the startup capital for Death Row with the help of attorney David Kenner. Harris therefore sued Knight for money owed to him. His wife Lydia served as co-producer. Savidge reported threats against him, but stated he refused to be deterred. Knight had rejected the film, saying only he could tell the true story. Xenon hoped to bring “Welcome to Death Row” to theaters by the summer.
