Death Row Records is bringing its most famous albums back to stores. As Billboard reported on February 23, 2001, ahead of its March 3 issue, the label signed a distribution agreement with independent distributor DNA. A total of 16 titles were to be re-released digitally remastered, some with bonus material. The publication named May as the release date.
Two Tupac albums in the package
From Tupac, these include All Eyez on Me and The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory, released under the name Makaveli. Alongside them are Snoop Doggy Dogg’s Doggystyle and Dr. Dre’s The Chronic, as well as records by Daz Dillinger, Tha Dogg Pound, Lady of Rage and Michel’le, three samplers and four soundtracks. Previously, Interscope and Priority had distributed these albums.
Greetings from prison
DNA had already been working with Death Row since the previous year and had distributed, among other titles, the sampler Too Gangsta for Radio. Label head Suge Knight had been in a California prison since October 1996 for violating probation terms stemming from a 1992 assault case. He conveyed that he enjoyed working with people who wanted to grow with him and his ideas. He expected to be free in the summer and then planned to put out new artists.
