On Sunday evening, September 8, doctors at University Medical Center in Las Vegas operated on a critically injured man: Tupac Shakur was in intensive care following the shooting. During these days of uncertainty, Lynda Lane wrote a situation report for Music Boulevard (Music Wire).
Doctors Removed the Right Lung
The author reported what hospital spokesperson Dale Pugh confirmed: Tupac was in critical condition, and further surgeries were possible. Because of severe internal injuries, he lost his right lung. He had been struck multiple times, three times in the chest.
Lane described the crime as it was known at the time: Around 11:15 p.m. on Saturday, September 7, Tupac and Suge Knight were driving to a nightclub following the Mike Tyson vs. Bruce Seldon boxing match. A convoy of about ten cars followed them. A white four-door Cadillac pulled up alongside their car, and shots were fired from the vehicle. Knight suffered a minor head injury and was released on Sunday. Death Row declined to comment for the time being and was planning a press conference with Tupac’s mother. There were no suspects.
Four Bullets from a Glock
The medical details were confirmed. At the 2026 murder trial, the medical examiner explained that a bullet tore through his chest, causing the lung to collapse and bleed. Doctors removed the damaged lung. In total, Tupac was struck by four bullets from a .40-caliber Glock pistol. Following the surgeries, respiratory failure set in. Afeni Shakur decided to end treatment. He died on September 13, 1996, at 4:03 p.m.
The crime scene is also precisely known today: the intersection of East Flamingo Road and Koval Lane, a few hundred meters from the Strip. The convoy’s destination was Club 662, a venue owned by Suge Knight where Tupac was scheduled to perform at a charity event. Shortly before, bicycle police officers had stopped the BMW for music playing too loudly.
A Conviction After Three Decades
The “no suspects” gap remained open for a long time. Earlier on the evening of the crime, Tupac’s group had beaten Orlando Anderson, a member of the Southside Crips, at the MGM Grand. This incident only came into focus days later. Anderson’s uncle Duane “Keffe D” Davis was charged in 2023 and found guilty of murder in Las Vegas on August 31, 2026 (not final, as of October 2026). In this way, that initial report turned into decades of legal proceedings.
