Sales and Certifications
From RIAA certifications to billions of Spotify streams: what can be verified about Tupac's sales and what lies behind the 75 million.
The accounts of Tupac’s career swing between official certifications and stubborn estimates. What is certain: two of his albums reached Diamond status in the US. And in the streaming era, listeners play his music more than that of almost any other rapper from the nineties.
The albums in the US
The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certifies shipments to retailers, not actual sales to customers. For double albums, it counts each disc separately. That explains the Diamond status of All Eyez on Me: the RIAA records ten million units, although according to Nielsen figures about 5.9 million copies went over the counter.
| Album | Certification | Date |
|---|---|---|
| 2Pacalypse Now (1991) | Gold | April 19, 1995 |
| Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z… (1993) | Platinum | April 19, 1995 |
| Me Against the World (1995) | 2× Platinum | December 6, 1995 |
| All Eyez on Me (1996) | Diamond (5× Platinum in April 1996 before that) | July 23, 2014 |
| The Don Killuminati (1996, as Makaveli) | 4× Platinum | June 15, 1999 |
| R U Still Down? (1997) | 4× Platinum | December 15, 1997 |
| Greatest Hits (1998) | Diamond | June 23, 2011 |
| Until the End of Time (2001) | 4× Platinum | June 10, 2014 |
| Better Dayz (2002) | 3× Platinum | July 23, 2014 |
| Loyal to the Game (2004) | Platinum | February 15, 2005 |
In addition, the Outlawz album Still I Rise (1999) was certified Platinum on February 2, 2000. Adding up the ten Tupac albums in the table gives 39.5 million certified units. That sum excludes soundtracks and measures only shipments under RIAA rules, not individual buyers.
From a cell to No. 1, and 450 weeks on the chart
Several albums entered the Billboard 200 at No. 1. Me Against the World reached the top in March 1995 while Tupac was in prison. All Eyez on Me sold about 566,000 copies in its first week, The Don Killuminati about 664,000 (figures from the album pages on this site).
One chart long-runner is Greatest Hits. At the end of November 2022, the Billboard charts and the magazines Vibe and AllHipHop reported that the album had spent a total of 450 weeks on the Billboard 200. At the time it stood at No. 94. Only three rap albums had lasted longer: Eminem’s Curtain Call: The Hits (607 weeks), Kendrick Lamar’s good kid, m.A.A.d city (526) and Drake’s Take Care (508). Late platinum thanks to streaming
For many singles, the RIAA only confirmed their success decades later, once streams counted toward certification. California Love and How Do U Want It were an exception: as a double A-side they received 2× Platinum as early as August 6, 1996. Dear Mama reached 3× Platinum on March 31, 2021. On the same day the RIAA also certified I Get Around and Keep Ya Head Up, among others, Platinum.
Gold and platinum in Europe
In Germany, the BVMI lists seven gold records. The first went to Changes in 1999, the latest to Hit ‘Em Up in 2026. The details are on Tupac and Germany. In the UK, according to the single’s page on this site, the BPI awarded Changes 2× Platinum in 2023. A complete country-by-country list is hard to compile: the industry bodies’ databases have to be queried one by one, and figures in reference works quickly go out of date.
Billions of plays on Spotify
According to an analysis by kworb.net, Tupac’s Spotify catalog had a total of about 14.35 billion streams across 337 tracks on October 7, 2026. That works out to an average of just over 5.3 million plays a day. The most-played tracks were California Love (original version, about 1.21 billion), Hit ‘Em Up (about 1.09 billion), Ambitionz Az a Ridah (about 1.0 billion), All Eyez on Me with Big Syke (about 0.92 billion) and Changes (about 0.76 billion). These numbers come from a fan statistics service, not from Spotify itself, and they change daily.
The puzzle of the 75 million
Ask about Tupac’s worldwide sales and the answer is almost always the same: “more than 75 million.” The figure also appeared in coverage of his posthumous star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in June 2023. It comes from label and press statements; there is no independent check. No central body records worldwide record sales.
The RIAA tally covers only the US and comes to just under 40 million certified units; the number of copies actually sold is considerably lower. The only defensible statement is therefore: just under 40 million certified units in the US under RIAA counting, more than 75 million worldwide according to label and press statements. Even higher figures that circulate in some online articles give no verifiable source and are not repeated on this page.
More honors are on the Awards page, and the Discography has details on every album.
