The Grammys are the music award fans most often associate with Tupac-precisely because he never received one. An overview of all nominations is on the page Awards. This is about the story behind it: the evening at the Shrine Auditorium in 1996, the awards missing after his death, and the honor that finally came after all.
No Trophy in the Hall, but an Appearance with KISS
At the 38th Grammy Awards on February 28, 1996, at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, Tupac was nominated twice: Me Against the World for Best Rap Album and Dear Mama for Best Rap Solo Performance. He did not win in either category. A table on Wikipedia lists the rap album entry as a win; the remaining sources, including AP’s analysis of the Grammy data, speak of seven nominations without a win. The official Grammy data is authoritative here.
He took the stage that evening anyway. Together with the band KISS, he presented the award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group. KISS appeared in full makeup and costume for the first time since 1979, as Wikipedia notes; Tupac introduced them. The Versace suit he wore that night was later exhibited: first in 2015 at the Grammy Museum, then in 2022 in the exhibition Wake Me When I’m Free (see Exhibitions and museums).
After September 13: Five More Nominations, No Award
All further nominations came after September 13, 1996:
Together with the two nominations from 1996, that makes seven-as many as AP’s analysis of the Grammy data counted in November 2023. In any case, no award was won.
In 2026, “All Eyez on Me” Enters the Grammy Hall of Fame
The Grammy Hall of Fame operates under different rules than the regular competition for trophies. The Recording Academy established it in 1973. A committee of professionals selects recordings that are at least 25 years old and have “qualitative or historical significance”; the trustees confirm the selection. With the class of 2026, the Hall counts 1,179 recordings.
On February 11, 2026, the Academy announced 14 new recordings: eleven albums and three songs. Among them was All Eyez on Me. The class also includes Selena’s Amor Prohibido, Radiohead’s OK Computer, Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation 1814, and Eric B. & Rakim’s Paid in Full.
The gala took place on May 8, 2026, at the Beverly Hilton; E.D.I. Mean of the Outlawz accepted the honor for Tupac. The reports on this: Induction on February 11 and Gala on May 8.
No Award in Competition, but a Place in Pop History
The Hall of Fame does not award a trophy in competition; rather, it honors a work in retrospect, and it does so only once a recording is 25 years old. That All Eyez on Me (1996) came in 2026 follows that rule. The honor does not replace an award, but it places the album in the same rank as the great records of pop history. How the album sold is documented on the page Sales and certifications.
