Tupac's killer unmasked after 22 years? What was known in 2019, and what followed in 2026
In 2019, Keffe D spoke publicly about the shots fired at Tupac. What many thought was time-barred ended in court in 2026 with a guilty verdict.
More than two decades after the shooting in Las Vegas, Duane “Keffe D” Davis spoke on camera about the attack. In the 2018 BET series Death Row Chronicles, the former leader of the South Side Compton Crips and uncle of Orlando Anderson described the night of September 7, 1996. On June 4, 2019, the site picked up reports according to which the crime was ultimately an act of revenge. What was still considered time-barred back then ended in court in 2026 with a guilty verdict.
Four Men in the Cadillac: Shots from the Back Seat
Davis stated that he was in the white Cadillac himself, together with Terrence “T-Brown” Brown, his nephew Orlando Anderson, and DeAndrae “Dre” Smith. Hours earlier, Anderson had been beaten up at the MGM Grand by Tupac and members of the Death Row entourage. According to the post, the shots reportedly came from the back seat; who fired, Davis did not say at the time. In 2019, he followed up with his version in the memoir Compton Street Legend. Anderson, long the prime suspect, had denied any involvement and was killed in another shooting in 1998.
The post also mentioned another theory: Suge Knight had stated in 2017 that he himself may have been the real target. Finally, the text pointed to the film City of Lies starring Johnny Depp, whose theatrical release had been postponed several times. The film finally opened in US theaters on March 19, 2021; it centers primarily on the investigation into the murder of The Notorious B.I.G.
Murder Has No Statute of Limitations in Nevada
The old text assumed that the perpetrator could no longer be prosecuted due to the statute of limitations. That was wrong: murder has no statute of limitations in Nevada. Nor were Davis’s earlier statements in any way new at the time. As early as 2009, he had told investigators in connection with a drug case: “We did the other one”meaning the murder of Tupac.
Arrest in 2023, Guilty Verdict in August 2026
On September 29, 2023, Davis was arrested in Las Vegas after a grand jury indicted him for first-degree murder. The trial began in August 2026. The prosecution relied primarily on his own statements to police, the media, and in his book; the defense called them fabrications to promote the book.
On August 31, 2026, the jury found him guilty of first-degree murder with a deadly weapon; the prosecution dropped the gang enhancement. According to the prosecution, Davis procured the gun and ordered the crime; who pulled the trigger remained open. The other three occupants of the Cadillac are dead. As of October 2026: The verdict is not final (Davis announced an appeal), and sentencing is set for October 13, 2026.
