Two Versions of a Murder: Keffe D's 1998 and 2008 Statements in Court
Ten years and two completely different versions: How the defense attacked its own client's credibility in the trial against Duane Davis.
On August 19, 2026, the trial of Duane “Keffe D” Davis centered on two completely different stories from the same man. Former FBI agent Wade Lee testified about a 1998 “proffer” interview (a statement given under legal assurances). Davis was under pressure at the time because of a cocaine case. His version: After the brawl at the MGM Grand, he stayed at the Excalibur with Anderson and their girlfriends. He suspected Compton police officers acting on behalf of Suge Knight might have fired the shots because Tupac wanted to leave Death Row.
Ten Years Later, Everything Sounds Different
In an interview with investigators on the Biggie case, he told a different story. Former LAPD detective Daryn Dupree testified about this while the jury listened to the recordings. The unusual feature of this trial: defense attorney Michael Sanft attacked the credibility of his own client. Under cross-examination, Lee admitted that he had not followed up on some of Davis’ leads, such as those concerning the Compton police. More on the versions at The Investigation.
