Quincy Jones Dies: From Feud to Engagement with Daughter Kidada
He shaped the music world, but for Tupac he was above all the father of his fiancée Kidada: Producer Quincy Jones has died at age 91.
He had produced Michael Jackson’s albums Off the Wall, Thriller, and Bad, among others, and was among the founders of Vibe magazine. On November 3, 2024, producer, arranger, and publisher Quincy Jones died at the age of 91 at his home in Bel Air, his family announced. In Tupac’s story, he is important above all as the father of Kidada Jones, to whom Tupac was engaged in 1996.
An Outraged Letter After the Interview
The relationship was not without tension. In 1993, Tupac had spoken disparagingly about Jones in an interview with The Source. Jones’s youngest daughter Rashida, then 17, subsequently wrote an indignant open letter to the magazine. In July 2024, she told The New Yorker she had been “furious.”
An Apology and the Inscription “Pac & Dada”
The conflict resolved well: when Rashida met Tupac, he apologized immediately. The ring Tupac wore shortly before his death bears the inscription “Pac & Dada 1996,” see the report of July 26, 2023. Rashida Jones paid tribute to her father after his death: “He was love.”
