Sheryl Crow calls Drake's AI Tupac "hateful"
In a BBC interview the singer criticizes AI voices of the dead and cites Drake's "Taylor Made Freestyle" as an example.
In June 2024, Sheryl Crow criticized the use of artificial intelligence in music in a BBC interview. As an example, the singer named Drake’s “Taylor Made Freestyle.” The song had used an AI voice of Tupac; after a cease-and-desist letter from the estate, Drake took it offline, see the item of April 25. Rolling Stone relayed her comments on June 26.
A “slippery slope”
Crow called AI a “slippery slope,” especially when it imitates other artists’ voices. “You cannot bring people back from the dead and believe that they would stand for that,” she said.
She suspected Drake thought he shouldn’t do it but would say sorry later. But it’s already done, she said, and people will find the song even if he takes it down. It is “hateful,” she added, and antithetical to the life force that exists in all of us.
The living get copied too
She also described how a songwriter she knows used AI to create demos in the voice of John Mayer.
