He spent more than 36 years behind bars. On Sunday, December 18, 2022, Dr. Mutulu Shakur was released from prison. The Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed this according to Complex, which cited the New York Daily News.

60 Years in Prison After the 1981 Robbery

The 72-year-old had been convicted in 1988 of conspiracy in connection with a 1981 armored truck robbery in which two police officers and a security guard died. He received 60 years. The U.S. Parole Commission had granted the release in November on medical grounds (see report).

Blood Cancer and Strict Conditions

According to Vibe, he suffered from stage 3 multiple myeloma, a blood cancer, and had previously been in a prison hospital. His conditions include that he is not permitted contact with family members of the victims of his crimes, nor any with his sister Assata Shakur, who is on the run from U.S. authorities.

His family thanked everyone who had campaigned for his release. In light of his condition, they asked for privacy.
