25th Anniversary of Death: A Quarter Century Without Charges
Four hits, six days until death, and 25 years without a verdict: when Tupac's death marked 25 years in 2021, still no one had been charged in the murder.
The brawl in the lobby of the MGM Grand, the shots at the corner of Flamingo Road and Koval Lane, four hits, death six days later: the Las Vegas Review-Journal had already reconstructed the evening of September 7, 1996, on August 28. When the 25th anniversary of Tupac’s death arrived on September 13, 2021, the case was still considered unsolved even 25 years later; no one had been charged. On the anniversary, The Source and Vibe looked back. Author Kevin Powell, who was in Las Vegas, dedicated a poem to Tupac and Biggie.
Davis describes himself as a participant; there are no charges in 2021
On September 8, Musikexpress reported on Duane “Keffe D” Davis. Davis has described himself in documentaries and interviews since 2018 as a participant and, by his own account, was sitting in the car from which the shots were fired. There were no charges against him in 2021.
On September 15, Tupac’s nephew Malik Shakur spoke out. With “50 for 50,” the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation launched a mental health campaign. How the case later unfolded is covered under Investigations; for the evening itself, see Last Week.
