Shock G: Tupac's First Mentor Is Dead
He brought 19-year-old Tupac on tour as a roadie and dancer: Digital Underground founder Shock G died on April 22, 2021, at age 57 in Tampa.
In a hotel room in Tampa, Florida, Gregory “Shock G” Jacobs was found unresponsive. On April 22, 2021, the founder and leader of Digital Underground died at age 57; his father confirmed the death to TMZ. On June 10, the Hillsborough County medical examiner reported, according to Billboard, that Jacobs died of an accidental overdose of fentanyl, methamphetamine, and alcohol.
From Roadie to Hit Producer
For Tupac, Shock G was the first mentor in the music business. In 1990, Digital Underground took the then 19-year-old on tour as a roadie and dancer. Shock G later produced, among others, “I Get Around” (1993), which Vibe also notes in its obituary. Musikexpress writes that Shock G discovered and nurtured the rapper at the beginning of his career.
What this shared beginning looked like in detail is traced on the pages for Shock G and the group Digital Underground.
