28 years in prison for Suge Knight
The former Death Row boss pleaded no contest on September 20, 2018; on October 4 the sentence was handed down: 28 years in prison.
In January 2015, Marion “Suge” Knight ran over and killed the businessman Terry Carter outside a burger stand in Compton. His attorneys argued self-defense. In October 2018, the co-founder of Death Row Records and Tupac’s label boss was sentenced to 28 years in prison.
A deal just before trial
The plea deal came days before jury selection was due to begin. On September 20, Knight pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter in Los Angeles County Superior Court, meaning he no longer contested the charge. The 28 years consist of 22 years for the manslaughter and six years under the “three strikes” rule.
Stone-faced in court
On October 4, the victim’s family read impact statements in court, and Knight sat stoically, Vibe reported. JUICE and rap.de reported the verdict in German as well. Tupac fans know Knight for another reason: on September 7, 1996, he was driving the car in which Tupac was shot (the 1996 shooting).
