"Fuck you": A Police Officer on Tupac's Last Words
A retired sergeant recalls the night of September 7, 1996, and the rapper's terse answer when asked who shot him.
On the night of September 7, 1996, Chris Carroll was the first to arrive at the crime scene on a bicycle. The Las Vegas police sergeant found Tupac in the passenger seat of Suge Knight’s BMW. He reportedly asked repeatedly who had shot him. Tupac looked at him, took a breath, and said, “Fuck you.”
The 2014 Report
On May 23, 2014, Rolling Stone and Musikexpress circulated a report from the magazine Vegas Seven in which Carroll, who retired in 2010, recounted the incident. Billboard added on May 25 that the piece was written by Carroll’s cousin. It is the recollection of a single eyewitness after almost 18 years.
The Indictment Follows Only in 2023
Who shot Tupac remained unanswered; authorities did not reach an indictment until 2023. What is established about his final hours is collected on the page Last Words. The evening of the attack is described in the article on the 1996 shooting.
