Afeni Shakur at the "Circle of Mothers"
At the "Circle of Mothers" in Miami, Afeni Shakur spoke to grieving mothers: let go of anger and honor the deceased through actions for the community.
In May 2014, the Trayvon Martin Foundation invited participants to Miami for the “Circle of Mothers Empowerment Retreat”. Featuring workshops and exercises, the gathering was aimed at mothers who have lost a child to gun violence. As AllHipHop reported on May 7, Afeni Shakur was invited as the keynote speaker, alongside speaker Lisa Nichols. Founder Sybrina Fulton, the mother of the fatally shot Trayvon Martin, wrote that Afeni had also experienced her loss in the public eye.
Staying Angry Leads Nowhere
On Saturday, May 17, Afeni delivered her speech. On May 22, Vibe published an audio recording of it. In it, she asked the audience to let go of their anger and instead honor the deceased with positive actions for the community. Staying angry leads nowhere, she said in essence.
