Assata Shakur on the FBI Terrorist List
Two million dollar bounty: The FBI places Tupac's godmother Assata Shakur on its list of most wanted terrorists as the first woman.
On May 2, 2013, the FBI announced that Assata Shakur (Joanne Chesimard) had become the first woman placed on its Most Wanted Terrorists list. According to AllHipHop, the reward for information leading to her capture was doubled to two million dollars. Rolling Stone calls her Tupac’s godmother.
Convicted in 1977, Fled to Cuba
Shakur was convicted in 1977 of the murder of police officer Werner Foerster, who died in 1973 during a traffic stop on the New Jersey Turnpike. In 1979, she escaped from prison. For years, she has lived in Cuba, where she has asylum.
For Supporters, a Political Maneuver
Her supporters dispute that she could have fired a weapon because she was injured. In the timing of the listing, shortly after the 40th anniversary of the incident, they see a political maneuver. The authorities stand by their account. For background: Black Panther Party and Tupac.
