Sales Jump After Coachella: 571 Percent Gain for “Greatest Hits”
Measurable post-Coachella effect: Tupac's “Greatest Hits” jumped 571 percent and returned to the Billboard 200 for the first time since 2000.
One week after the performance at the Coachella festival, the sales figures demonstrated the effect. According to Billboard and Nielsen SoundScan, Tupac’s 1998 compilation Greatest Hits returned to the Billboard 200 for the first time since 2000: No. 129 with roughly 4,000 copies sold delivered a 571 percent increase over the previous week. All Eyez On Me climbed 95 percent to 2,000, while Me Against the World rose 53 percent to 1,000.
“Hail Mary” in the Lead, Snoop Benefits
In downloads, Hail Mary led the pack with 13,000 units (up 1,530 percent), ahead of California Love with 11,000 and “2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted” with 9,000 (up 881 percent). Snoop Dogg rose from No. 29 to No. 20 on Billboard’s Social 50 because the duet video was hosted on his YouTube channel rather than Tupac’s.
Rolling Stone and Complex picked up the figures. In absolute terms the volumes remained modest, but in relative terms the spike was pronounced.
