Davey D Releases a Lost 1991 Tupac Interview

On the B-side of an old cassette, journalist Davey D found a conversation with Tupac from the Juice era. For his 2009 birthday, he made it public.

It was not new music, but a rare contemporary document. For Tupac’s birthday on June 16, 2009, rap journalist Davey D published the complete transcript of an interview he had conducted with him in 1991. The radio stations KPFA and Radio X also broadcast the conversation in full length.

Found While Sorting Old Tapes

The tape was considered lost. Davey D came across it by chance, on the B-side of a cassette, while working on a best-of compilation of Digital Underground. According to rap.de, Davey D wanted to find out how much of Tupac himself was in his role in the film Juice, which made him known as an actor. Throughout the entire conversation, according to rap.de, Tupac carried a loaded weapon with him.

rap.de noted that by then, more songs by Tupac had been released after his death than during his lifetime. What Tupac told Davey D in 1991 is summarized on the page Davey D Meets the “Rebel of the Underground”.
