Afeni Shakur Screens "Tupac: Resurrection" in Lumberton
Ahead of the nationwide release, Afeni Shakur hosted a special screening in the town where her family's history in the US began.
Between the major premieres in Los Angeles, New York, and Atlanta, Afeni Shakur set a date of her own: As AllHipHop reported on November 5, 2003, she planned to host a special screening of Tupac: Resurrection the following Friday in Lumberton, North Carolina. The report’s headline mistakenly mentioned South Carolina, while the text states North Carolina.
Back to the Roots
Lumberton is located in Robeson County. There, according to Afeni Shakur, her family’s history in the United States began: Her ancestors were enslaved here, then sharecroppers, and later domestic workers. “This is where our family heritage began,” she said. She wanted to show the community how hard work, faith, and self-respect could turn life for the better.
The Road to Theaters
At that point, the world premiere in Los Angeles was already behind the film. New York was scheduled to follow the following Monday, Atlanta on November 12. Nationwide, Tupac: Resurrection opened on November 14. On the premiere: Premiere at the Cinerama Dome.
