Suge Knight Causes Turmoil at Beverly Hills Hip-Hop Summit
At the West Coast Hip-Hop Summit on February 14, 2002, Suge Knight attacked numerous musicians and accused Janet Jackson of using Tupac photos.
It was originally intended to be a peaceful gathering of the West Coast hip-hop scene. On Thursday, February 14, 2002, the scene gathered in the ballroom of the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills. Def Jam founder Russell Simmons served as co-organizer, and Louis Farrakhan delivered the keynote address, lasting 90 minutes.
Lashing Out at the Microphone
Then Suge Knight stepped up to the podium. He had arrived late, accompanied by Mack 10, Kurupt, Irv Gotti and the Outlawz, among others. According to MTV News, he insulted Dr. Dre, Eminem and Master P, among others, as well as women and homosexuals. He accused Janet Jackson of using pictures of Tupac in her concerts. Anyone representing the West Coast and gangsta rap had to show up as well, he shouted. Dr. Dre and his camp, including Snoop Dogg and Eminem, had not attended.
Protests, but No Violence
Several guests left the hall. Singer Jewell, formerly with Death Row herself, screamed at Knight and walked out. Simmons later defended letting Knight speak. Despite the tensions, it remained peaceful, which co-organizer Mike Concepcion considered a success. In the end, the result was a campaign in which rappers were to encourage young people to register to vote.
