Orlando Anderson Dies in Compton Shootout
A dispute over money at a car wash, three dead: On May 29, 1998, Orlando Anderson died in Compton. He was 23 years old and had never been charged.
On the afternoon of May 29, 1998, Orlando Anderson died in a shootout in Compton. Around 15:10, he and a companion had driven to a car wash at the corner of Alondra Boulevard and Oleander Avenue, where members of a rival gang were hanging out. An altercation broke out, and both sides fired. Anderson, 23, and another man died at Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center, a third the following morning. The only survivor was arrested on suspicion of murder.
No Connection to Tupac
According to police, the dispute was over an unpaid debt; nothing pointed to a connection to the Tupac case. Earlier the same day, Anderson’s grandmother had died of natural causes.
Anderson had never been charged and had denied any involvement in the shooting in Las Vegas. Los Angeles investigators still considered him a suspect in the fall of 1997. Following his death, Las Vegas police stated that their investigation was unaffected; they had only questioned Anderson and had never considered him a suspect. In February 1997, their investigator Kevin Manning had explicitly referred to him as such. Afeni Shakur’s civil lawsuit against him was still pending at that time. How the suspicion against him was reassessed decades later is shown in the dossier The “Keffe D” Case.
