Suge Knight Breaks His Silence, but Not on the Sequence of Events
"I would give up Death Row": On September 18, 1996, Suge Knight spoke publicly for the first time on Tupac's death. He said nothing about the shots.
Eleven days after the shooting, Suge Knight commented publicly for the first time on September 18, 1996. The head of Death Row Records, who had been behind the wheel of the BMW, spoke with the Los Angeles Times, but refused to give any details about the night of the crime, citing the ongoing investigation.
“Joined at the Hip”
Knight touched only briefly on police accusations that he was an uncooperative witness: he said he had needed a few days to collect his thoughts and recover from his minor head injury before speaking with investigators. He had been grieving continuously since Tupac’s death. If he could change anything, he would give up Death Row and this life, Knight said; he and Tupac had been “joined at the hip,” inseparable.
The newspaper described Knight as a central figure in the case, a former football player from Compton who had turned the label into a multi-million dollar business. What Knight told MTV two days later can be found in the magazine: Suge Knight Speaks About Tupac’s Final Hours.
