120 Days in Jail for Tupac, Suspended for Now

A Los Angeles judge sentenced Tupac to 120 days in jail for probation violations in April 1996. His lawyers appealed; he remained free.

On April 4, 1996, Judge Abraham Khan in Los Angeles sentenced Tupac Shakur to 120 days in jail and a 1,000 dollar fine. He found that probation from two cases in Los Angeles had been violated: Tupac had not completed roadside community service, had been arrested with a weapon in Hollywood in 1994, and had been convicted in New York that same year. The judge rejected the argument of defense attorney David Kenner that his client had not worked out of fear for his safety.

“Then I’ll Still Be Richer”

The jail term was scheduled to begin on June 7. The lawyers immediately filed an appeal, and Tupac was allowed to remain free pending a decision. He himself had sought 60 days. After the hearing, he said that they could lock him up for 120 years and he would still be richer than everyone persecuting him.

Still pending was the case regarding the pistol that police claimed to have found under his seat in April 1994 when they stopped him and his half-brother Maurice Harding (Mopreme Shakur) on Hollywood Boulevard. More on this: Other Cases 1991 to 1996.
