At the tenth Soul Train Music Awards on March 29, 1996, at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, 2Pac won the award for best rap album. His 1995 album Me Against the World was honored. He prevailed against, among others, Coolio. The big winners of the evening were TLC and D’Angelo with three awards each; The Notorious B.I.G. received the award for best song for One More Chance.
The Evening as a Stage in the Feud
The initial report by the Los Angeles Times spoke of a harmonious evening. Only after the shooting in Las Vegas did the same newspaper recall a different side in September 1996: At the Soul Train Awards, the two rappers had allegedly confronted each other, and according to reports, members of Tupac’s circle had pointed weapons at Biggie’s camp. This is documented only as a contemporary report. The background of the feud is covered on the page East against West.
