In the early hours of July 15, 1997, Suge Knight’s girlfriend returned with an acquaintance at around 3:15 a.m. to the house in Woodland Hills that Knight had rented. Upstairs in the bathroom stood an intruder with a semiautomatic handgun. The Associated Press report documented a robbery in the label head’s private circle while he sat in prison.
A Gun in the Bathroom and $50,000 in Loot
The perpetrator forced the two young women (18 and 20) to the floor, took their jewelry-including a $10,000 ring-and made them hand over a Rolex whose box was lying open. Then he locked them in the bathroom and disappeared with cash and jewelry worth roughly $50,000. Nobody was hurt.
Police withheld the woman’s name for safety reasons; she was said to be the mother of Knight’s 18-month-old child. Detective Robert Johansen would not rule out that the crime was connected to Death Row: whether the perpetrator had anything to do with the company or its problems “is hard to say.” The label’s head of security was investigating on his own.
Death Row in the Summer of 1997: The Boss Behind Bars
The report was a small piece of a larger picture: Death Row in the summer of 1997, without Tupac, without Dr. Dre, with its boss behind bars. Knight had been arrested in October 1996 and sentenced to nine years in prison on February 28, 1997, for violating his probation in the brawl with Orlando Anderson at the MGM Grand-hours before the shots were fired at Tupac. At the same time, federal investigations into the label were underway.
Knight was released in 2001; Death Row never recovered. In 2018, following a fatal hit-and-run in 2015, he was sentenced to 28 years in prison; he is currently serving this sentence. Whether the 1997 robbery was ever solved is not on record.
