In 2003 Lauren Lazin’s documentary Tupac: Resurrection reached cinemas. What set it apart was that Tupac narrates his own life, pieced together from interviews and recordings. The book of the same name follows the same idea. The original concept came from Afeni Shakur; it was edited by Jacob Hoye and Karolyn Ali, with Walter Einenkel as photo editor.

About the book

What it covers

The book works as the autobiography Tupac never got to write. Interviews, letters, journal entries, poems, lyrics and screenplay drafts are woven into a first-person narrative, from his childhood in New York to his final months in Los Angeles. It is filled with photographs, many from the family’s own collection and from the archives of friends and collaborators.

Assessment

An authorized book from the estate and one of the most important collections of Tupac’s own words. Its strength is also its limit: everything has been chosen and arranged by people devoted to his memory, and critical outside voices are absent. Readers looking for a critical biography should pair it with other titles.

For German readers it is one of the few books on this list that was translated. November 2004 is sometimes given as the release date, along with an ISBN belonging to a different edition; the original hardcover came out from Atria in 2003.
