For around a decade, Jasmine Guy conducted conversations with Afeni Shakur. The actress, known from the sitcom A Different World, captured a life story told largely in Afeni’s own words. Anyone wishing to understand Tupac cannot bypass his mother. But this book places Afeni herself at the center.

From the Black Panthers to Her Son’s Legacy
The book traces Afeni’s journey from North Carolina to the Bronx and her joining the Black Panther Party in 1968. As a defendant in the trial against the “Panther 21,” she defended herself and was acquitted in May 1971. At that point, she was pregnant with Tupac, who was born a few weeks later.
The biography tells of poverty, racism, and Afeni’s later drug addiction, from which she freed herself. It also describes how she managed his legacy after Tupac’s death. According to the publisher, the conversations revolve around love, racism, drugs, music, and her son, as well as how his music continues to resonate.
First-Hand, but Without Critical Distance
The book is an authorized, first-hand life story. Its value lies in Afeni’s own voice and her candor, especially on painful subjects such as addiction. The work offers no critical distance: Guy is a confidante, not a detached biographer.
As a companion to the biographies of Tupac, the volume is indispensable because it tells the political history from which he came. The FX docuseries Dear Mama (2023) takes up many of these themes.
