Where Tupac Lived, Studied and Is Remembered

From East Harlem via Baltimore and Marin City to Las Vegas and Lumberton: Tupac's life stations in chronological order, and what stands there today.

Tupac Shakur lived in few places for long and in many only briefly. Anyone searching for his traces rarely stands before monuments, but mostly in ordinary residential neighborhoods or on street corners. This overview arranges the stations in the chronological order of his life. Private residential addresses are excluded; street, neighborhood, and a note on what is there today are sufficient.

Five Stations from East Harlem to North Carolina

  1. East Harlem and the Bronx (1971 to 1984): Birthplace and childhood, first stage experience in a Harlem theater. More on East Harlem and the Bronx.
  2. Baltimore (1984 to 1988): Pen Lucy neighborhood, the library’s rap contest, and since May 2026, “Tupac Shakur Way.” More on Baltimore and, for the school, on Baltimore School for the Arts.
  3. Marin City (1988 to 1990): Tamalpais High School, poetry class, the path to Digital Underground; the housing complex is currently being renovated. More on Marin City.
  4. Las Vegas (1996): The site of the shooting, two utility poles, and no monument: Flamingo Road and Koval Lane.
  5. Lumberton, North Carolina: Afeni’s hometown and, according to Pearlman’s research, the resting place of the ashes: Lumberton.

Official Monuments Came Late

Official places of remembrance are rare and recent. Street signs exist in Oakland (2023) and Baltimore (2026), the star in Hollywood since 2023, and statues in Stone Mountain and Herford; the page Monuments contextualizes them.

State and church inductions are covered in Library of Congress and Vatican, museum exhibits in Exhibitions and Museums, and honors in Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Hollywood Walk of Fame, and Grammys.

Residential Neighborhoods and Private Land Are Not Sightseeing Destinations

Most of these stations are residential areas, schools, or private property. What is publicly accessible is noted on the individual pages: the street sign in Baltimore, the star in Hollywood, the utility poles in Las Vegas. A grave on private property is not a destination for outings. The full course of his life is told in the biography.
