300 Unreleased Songs as a Box Set: An Announcement from 2008
In 2008, a box set with over 300 unreleased songs was discussed. The originals remained in the archive, the hoped-for feature film arrived years later.
Tupac reportedly left behind more than 300 unreleased songs upon his death. Many of them had been released in the meantime, but enough material remained for several albums. On April 13, 2008, the site picked up a statement by Tre Maxie, whom the post introduced as director of the Tupac Amaru Shakur Center for the Arts: discussions were taking place about releasing everything in a box set. The project was not confirmed.
Bootlegs on the Street and Frustration Over Remixes
The post recalled that unreleased recordings had repeatedly surfaced on the street or on eBay since Tupac’s death, mostly on unofficial bootleg series such as “Makaveli 2” through “Makaveli 17.” At the same time, many fans were frustrated by the official releases under Afeni Shakur: they often featured newly produced remixes instead of the original versions. An “OG box set” with the original recordings, the author wrote, would be a dream for any fan.
According to the post, Maxie also spoke of a Tupac biography. The author wondered whether a feature film about Tupac’s life could follow after the documentary Tupac: Resurrection (2003).
The Box Set Never Came Out, the Feature Film Arrived in 2017
A box set of Tupac’s unreleased original recordings has not been released to this day (as of October 2026). Pac’s Life from 2006 remained the last posthumous studio album. What followed after that were primarily compilations such as the two Best of 2Pac albums from 2007.
The hope for a film, on the other hand, did come true, if late. In late 2011, the official site 2pac.com reported that John Singleton was in talks to direct a Tupac film. In the end, Benny Boom directed: All Eyez on Me was released in US theaters on June 16, 2017, on Tupac’s 46th birthday. A comprehensive documentary followed in 2023: the series Dear Mama by Allen Hughes, about Tupac and Afeni Shakur, premiered on FX on April 21, 2023.
