After 34 Years: The Child from “Brenda's Got a Baby” Meets His Mother
A twelve-year-old girl, a trash chute, and a 1991 song: Biographer Jeff Pearlman tracks down the real people behind “Brenda's Got a Baby”.
A twelve-year-old girl becomes pregnant by a 21-year-old cousin and throws her baby into a trash chute. This newspaper report was the basis for “Brenda’s Got a Baby”. In October 2025, biographer Jeff Pearlman recounted on The Rich Eisen Show how he tracked down those involved.
The Search in Las Vegas
Tupac’s early confidante Leila Steinberg asked what had become of the baby. Pearlman hired genealogist Michele Soulli. She found Davonn Hodge in Las Vegas, who according to his own account had tracked down relatives through Ancestry.com, but not his mother.
Coincidence Ends the Uncertainty
Soulli tracked down the woman in Newark. Because she happened to be in Las Vegas at that very moment, mother and son met that same evening, 34 years later. The story comes from Pearlman’s own account and was reported by Billboard and AllHipHop. The child from the song now has a face.
