Oakland votes for "Tupac Shakur Way"

Oakland's city council gives a stretch of MacArthur Boulevard the honorary name "Tupac Shakur Way."

On May 16, 2023, Oakland’s city council voted to give a stretch of MacArthur Boulevard between Grand Avenue and Van Buren Avenue the additional name “Tupac Shakur Way.” According to The Source, the vote was unanimous. The existing street name stays; the honorary designation will appear on signs and commemorative plaques.

The proposal came from councilwoman Carroll Fife, who praised Tupac’s artistic and social work in the resolution and pointed to his ties to the city. Tupac was born in East Harlem and grew up in New York and Baltimore, but moved to the Bay Area in 1988 and lived in Oakland in the early 1990s. The honor continues a series of tributes to Bay Area figures that already includes streets named for Huey P. Newton, Dorothy King, Too $hort and Peter Van Kleef. The unveiling took place in November, see the item of November 3. For his time in California see the biography.
