Dear Mama: Director Announces Previously Unreleased Material

Unheard audio recordings, a cappella tracks by Tupac, and pictures from the first years of his life: in January 2023, director Allen Hughes announced archival material that had never been seen before. At an FX presentation for television critics, he offered initial insights into the docuseries Dear Mama: The Saga of Afeni and Tupac Shakur. Wherever possible, his team had searched for such material. For fans, those are the key points, Hughes said; above all, however, it makes it possible to understand why Tupac made certain decisions.

Five Episodes About Mother and Son

The five episodes tell the story of Tupac and his mother Afeni Shakur, a former Black Panther. Hughes is writer, director, and executive producer; Staci Robinson is also among the executive producers. In 2019, the project had been announced under the working title Outlaw.

Broadcast Premiere on April 21 on FX and Hulu

FX airs the first two episodes on April 21 at 10 p.m. Eastern Time, and Hulu streams them the following day. After that, one episode follows each week. In late March, a second trailer was released, showing Tupac in interview clips talking about his mother. More on the series: Dear Mama.
